Waiting in the Wings is a Noel Coward play centred on a charity home for retired actresses. They chat, act cattily, act friendly and sometimes quarrel. The main story focuses on a feud between Lotta Bainbridge (Hermin Daley) and May Davenport (Wendy Davies) who both loved the same man 30 years ago and haven’t spoken since. All the characters have to deal with the loss of fame, beauty and independence. In a nutshell: growing old.
Set in Sussex in the late 1970s the action took place at the cricket pavilion before and during a match. The playing field was offstage where the audience was sitting. In between the cricket all manner of extra-marital antics, personal anxieties and loyalties were revealed by a well-rehearsed cast.
